Hi! I’m Abe. I am a Ph.D. candidate in philosophy at MIT under the supervision of Kieran Setiya. In Fall 2025, I’ll be a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Notre Dame. Starting Fall 2026, I’ll be an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Texas Tech University.
My primary research is in ethics. A central theme of my work is that we are often obligated to treat others better than they deserve or can demand of us—we are often obligated to give gifts, pay forward acts of kindness, and even forgive our wrongdoers. Such obligations, I argue, perform an important function: they draw us into closer affinity with other members of the moral community, enabling us to flourish even as deeply vulnerable, dependent creatures.
You can read more about my research here. You can find my CV here. And you can reach me at abe98 [at] mit [dot] edu.
When I’m not doing philosophy, I enjoy following cricket and football, reading good fiction, listening to good podcasts, and watching good films.

Feel free to call me 'Abe', but for citations, please use my legal name, 'Abraham Mathew'. Note that my last name only has one 't' (it's 'Mathew', not 'Matthew').
